A brief history of the Sunday Night Club

The story of the Sunday Night Club began around 10 years ago: Sasha, now the CEO and Mother Superior, was tending bar on a Sunday night at a brand new establishment. In fact, that evening was the very first night the bar was open to the public. The first customers to walk in were Jerry, now the President and Reverend Doctor Godfather, and CC, now the Minister of External Affairs, Travel & Tourism. Right off the bat, a friendship was formed, founded by a kinship of souls, a mesh of personalities, and a desire to celebrate Sunday nights.
From that very first Sunday on, Jerry and CC came into the bar to spend time chatting and laughing with their newfound bartender/friend, Sasha. The group had discovered an antidote for the Sunday night blahs and a good time was had by all. As more Sunday nights came and went, new members came into the fold: Sarah (AKA, Minister of Truth), Sanjay (AKA, Consiglieri) and Won (AKA, Minister of Internal Affairs/Fomenter).
In time, Sasha left that particular bar, but that wasn’t the end of the SNC; on the contrary, perhaps it served as the true beginning. Real friendships had been formed, ties that existed outside of that specific geographical place.

Caution: SNC members may be less avian than they appear.
The group continued meeting every Sunday. For a time, Sanjay hosted a yearly Super Bowl Party, Won bragged of being an excellent paella maker and tantalized other members with the idea of a paella party. Of course, the gang continued visiting Sasha at the other places she tended bar, following her to various watering holes around the city like a brace of baby ducks.
And then, on October 16, 2007, the Red Derby was born and the SNC found its official home. New members were added: Katie (AKA, Editor-in-Chief) and Sarah, the Commissioner of Baking who arrives with a homemade confection almost every Sunday. [Webmaster’s note: if you can’t make friends with salad, you certainly can with things that elevate blood sugar like crazy] Sarah is also primarily to blame for the layout and design of this blog.
So what’s new?
Back in the cold months of 2010, our esteemed President Jerry, decided to take a sabbatical from his SNC presidential duties. Although we felt the absence of his stewardship, leadership and guidance at our weekly SNC meetings, we carried on throughout the snowstorms of late winter and the early arrival of blistering DC summer. The meetings have continued every Sunday night at 9pm for the usual goings-on: gavel, announcements, celebratory woo woos, and our SNC-style special events such as the Easter egg decorating contest, the Fancy Party™, and near-weekly birthday celebrations. We look forward to the epic pumpkin-carving contest and chili cookoff in the fall, and to each Sunday night in between now and then.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that:
- Jerry will always be the President of the SNC, the President Emeritus if you will;
- Jerry 2.0, AKA The Gatherer, will officiate at the meetings, taking over the gavel responsibilities from the President Emeritus;
- Andre, AKA The Ambassador of Good-Will, will serve as The Inducting Officer for each new member;
- To shake things up a bit, the Sunday night gavel will be followed by a montage of 80s videos, made by Video Creator, Tim.
What remains the same about the SNC?
Sunday Night! The Commissioner of Baking’s fabulous creations! Life in DC, whisky, and the inimitable Red Derby! Many of the founding members still pop by from time to time to catch up with old friends and meet the many new ones. There’s always a familiar face at SNC and always a great late-night conversation and cocktail to keep Monday morning at bay for just a bit longer.
Cheers to all and welcome…

Excellent!
